Giving Back

At Bay State Marble & Granite, Inc. we think that it is important to give back to the community that makes our existence possible.  The following is a list of organizations to whom we have donated funds allocated for charity this year. If you would like to contribute to any of these organizations please let us know and we will be happy to help.

ALS Association

Boston Fire Department

Boston Police Superiors

Breast Cancer Research

M.A.D.D.

Partners Hospice

Veritas Academy

MS Foundation

AIDS in Africa Research

The Makula Fund

First Giving - Down Syndrome Association

South African film workshop

Mamelodi - South African medical relief trip

This past year we also decided to sponsor a child in Africa. A friend of ours travels to Uganda for relief work each year. We are now able to provide daily meals, clothing and education for one of the children that she knows personally. It has been a rewarding experience to receive letters and school report cards from her. We are trying our best to make her a Red Sox fan as well. If you would like to support one of these children that our friend knows personally and sees each year, please let us know and we will provide you with the information you need.

Cocktails For A Cure

Once again, Michael and Susanna Casper of South Boston opened their home for an evening of cocktails and food in order to raise money for Breast Cancer research. Susanna's sister Jen Palazollo, of Gloucester and Micheal and Susanna'a sister-in-law Donna Casper, of South Boston, are both breast cancer survivors.  Several thousand dollars were raised from the small gathering with a matching donation from Nstar. It was a wonderful and worthwhile evening and Bay State Marble & Granite was proud to be part of it.

If you are interested in supporting this cause, please do not hesitate to contact us.

5th Annual 5 Kayla Walk-Run

This year at Bay State Marble & Granite, Inc. we are proud to be  a corporate sponsor and volunteers for this very worthy event. The following is a brief story that touched our hearts and we hope it might move you as well.  The 5Kayla walk-run is to benefit HealthCare Dimensions Hospice for Kids Program. They have raised more than $170,000 for the much-needed medical, nursing, educational and social work services of their trained pediatric hospice staff.

Through generous donations, the 5Kayla has achieved a level of success and permanence in the commuinty we serve. New and renewed support will enable them to continue their work with terminally ill children, their families and loved ones.

Her name is Kayla

She was born on October 18, 1994. Two years later her sister Amanda arrived. Our life seemed so complete...until July of 1998, when Kayla was diagnosed with cancer. In the months that followed, Kayla underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. She endured so much never asking why.

Kayla enjoyed a six-month remission. Her hair started to grow back; she returned to her post as the cheerleading mascot for Pop Warner Football; entered preschool at Rosary Academy; and celebrated her 5th birthday at Disney World.

Her cancer came back in October. No one saw it coming. Three more months of treatment ended when Kayla's doctor told us she had four more weeks to live.

Once we accepted that Kayla's time left on earth would be brief, we knew that we wanted her at home. Kayla's doctor suggested HealthCare Dimensions Hospice for Kids because the end-of-life services services Hospice for Kids could provide in our home -- pain management, social services, sibling support and volunteer assistance -- would help us a lot.

He was right.

Kayla slept in her own bed and rested on the couch during the day. She enjoyed her bath, and on rare occasions when she was hungry, we prepared her favorite foods at a moment's notice.

When she felt up to it Kayla had visitors. She had her favorite toys, stuffed animals and dolls. One day she had a newly hatched chick in her hands for the very first time. It was so important for us to make even her smallest wishes come true. Kayla would never have experienced any of this in the hospital.

On May 26, 2000, 8 weeks after she came home, Kayla passed away on the couch in our den, surrounded by her family.

Of all the decisions we made for Kayla, the one desicion we will never, ever regret is having Hospice for Kids help s care for her at home. The support for our entire family through the last stages of Kayla's illness was invaluable. The bereavement group that Hospice for Kids sponsors helps us cope with her death.

How you can help

Aside from being a sponsor, it is our goal at Bay State Marble & Granite, Inc to raise as much money as possible for this event. If you would like to contribute, or if you have any questions about Hospice for Kids services please feel free to contact us at any time.

The funds to support Hospice for kids will go directly toward expanding access and ensuring quality of pediatric hospice services. Pediatric hospice care is often underfunded by insurance due to the level and amount of services required, forcing the hospice provider to cover those services under free care. Please help us give back to the community that has given us so much.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED SUPPORT THIS YEAR'S 5KAYLA! OVER $30,000 WAS RAISED AS THE EVENT WENT OFF WITHOUT A HITCH...EXCEPT FOR THE RAIN OF COURSE. DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. PLEASE CONTACT US WITH ANY QUESTIONS.

Sincerely,

Tom Hoffrage, Owner  Bay State Marble & Granite, Inc.
