Travertine: a mineral consisting of a massive usually layered calcium carbonate (as aragonite or calcite) formed by deposition from spring waters or especially from hot springs (Merriam Webster Dictionary)

Because Travertine usually has many cavities and holes, a filler such as color-matched epoxy must be used in order to hide these "flaws". However "flaws" so to speak, are part of the beauty and uniqueness of natural stone so some people choose to leave it as-is in order to retain a more rustic look. Color choice are limited with this stone.
